Bac Ha is a mountainous district with 70% of the population is ethnic H'Mong living with the very rich and unique customs and traditions. Among them, the most typical is the Gau Tao festival, a microcosm fully contained beliefs about physical activity, mental activity revolved around family relationships, family, the village.
The taken place is usually a low hill, relatively flat called "Hấu Tào" means "Festival Hill", the mountain direction often turn towards the east to catch the sun, the behind hill direction towards the higher mountain for meaning that children is better than father, is a firm support for the family, and also is a symbol of fortune, luck.
Gau Tao ceremony want to be held successfully, the organizers should be help by "Tru Tao" – the master hosts the festival ceremonial, "Ne Tao" – a woman helper during the festival and the two young men assisting the master of ceremonies is "Tu Tao" and "Say Tao". All those peoples that are prosperous family, happy, good and virtuous people, cherished by villagers.
Although the festival is taken place in early spring New Year, but the preparation rituals is proceeded from December to set up Tet pole to tie up a strip of linen to inform people in the area know about the upcoming festival. The main festival day depends on suitable day with the age of the homeowner of ceremony. After dedicating rituals to Tet pole , the master officially announces the festival opening. An opening singing ritual is performed by a competent person to sing but to have a healthy family, the well-off economic. Then, everyone can attend to sing, perform and enjoy the games, Khen dance, martial arts... and all are invited to drink wine by master of ceremony. The fun lasts until the evening with singing repartee between the homeowner with guests, between men and women. Guests afar can stay at the house of the owner to the next day to continue the fun. The last day evening, the master of ceremony professes to set down Tet pole, giving homeowners linen strip (to sew clothes for babies born by applying Gau Tao) and Tet pole root (to pave bed).
Gau Tao festival of the H'Mong people express spiritual cohesion between ethnic H'Mong with divine and also express solidarity and attachment between peoples in the region in particular and the community in northwestern mountainous region in general.
Gau Tao festival is one of the major festivals of Bac Ha district in the spring of the new year is certainly very attractive especially for those who love ethnic minority identity and enthusiasts in learning culture regions .
